White Clay

Malki Studio uses a variety of porcelaneous fine white clays.

Fine clays have the ability to be imprinted and textured in a precise manner, allowing for every detail (on silk saris, for example), to be transferred to the clay perfectly. Similarly, the veins of foliage or weaved threads of raw linen and cloth can be transported to the clay surface.

The nature of these clays enables a superior result when texture is required but it is also equally successful when a smooth and even surface is desired. This is due to the very fine particles which can be compressed and compacted to a pearlescent polished surface.

Once fired to a high temperature, the clay will solidify and harden to resemble marble. The high temperature firing also results in a very specific and pleasant chiming sound.

At Malki we often keep fired clay in its raw (unglazed) state as a reminder to the wearer that they are essentially wearing earth.

In fact, we consider the use of clay in our jewellery as enabling a direct contact between the material of the Earth (the ground) and the wearer, an exchange that we think is fundamentally important to human beings, and is quite magical.

At Malki, we love clay for the power of its essence and its facilitation of an interaction between the hands of the maker and the wearer.

In short, for us clay is a pure, clean, cool, honest, and smooth exchange between the wearer, the maker, and the Earth.
