Titanium

So named after the Titans of Ancient Greek Mythology, titanium lives up to the absolute power promised by its name.

Titanium is a lightweight metal, a property that betrays its incredible strength—in fact its strength-to-density ratio is the highest of any metallic element. Titanium is also very resistant to corrosion, which explains its many of uses in industry.

Titanium is notably applied in the aerospace industry, including in the production of jet engines, missiles, and spacecraft, and in medical prostheses due to its unreactive chemistry when in the presence of the human body.

When heated or subjected to an electrical current, titanium develops an oxide layer with a thickness that is proportional the amount of heat/voltage the metal is subjected to.

Titanium’s oxide layer astonishingly reflects light at different rates depending on the oxide layer’s thickness, causing it to appear in a rich variety of colours.

Titanium’s strength, light weight, corrosion resistance, and ability to acquire a plethora of colours make it a fantastic material for jewellery.

However, its strength also makes it quite difficult to work with, thus we often employ different techniques in making titanium jewellery compared to jewellery made with metals like silver, gold, and copper.

Nevertheless, Malki Studio artists love titanium. Our Orbit Collection is dominated by titanium that has been heat coloured in celestial hues of blue and purple as an expression of the heavens and the technological and spiritual efforts of humankind to explore the universe.
